British Independent Film Awards Nominations Announced / Tom joins the jury

British Independent Film Awards Nominations Announced / Tom joins the jury

Celebrating its fifteenth year, The Moët British Independent Film Awards have now been announced, honouring some of the finest independent films released in Britain this year.

This year’s awards will be held on 9th December, and you can be sure we’ll be bringing you the results on the night as they come in. It’s been another excellent year for British cinema, and it’s always nice to see films like these get the recognition they deserve.

Last year, Paddy Considine’s powerful directorial debut, Tyrannosaur, swept the top awards, taking Best Film, Best Directorial Debut, and Best Actress; Lynne Ramsay took home the Best Director award for We Need to Talk About Kevin; and Michael Fassbender’s remarkable performance in Steve McQueen’s Shame was rightfully honoured with Best Actor (whereas the film was sadly absent from the Oscars at the start of the year).

James Nesbitt is set to return once more as the host, with Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers) included in the jury, having also helped choose the Best British Newcomer Award at the BFI London Film Festival last month.

With so much success surrounding films like The Imposter and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, it’s excellent to see them making the list here, with Ben Wheatley returning after last year’s Kill List with Sightseers here. It’s also brilliant to see rising young talents like Elle Fanning and Alice Englert get recognition for their performances in Ginger & Rosa, alongside Andrea Riseborough in Shadow Dancer, standing shoulder-to-shoulder alongside the likes of Meryl Streep, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, and Olivia Colman.

Rufus Norris’ Broken, with Cillian Murphy, Tim Roth, and Rory Kinnear, leads the pack with an impressive nine nominations, with Wheatley’s Sightseers and Peter Strickland’s Berbian Sound Studio following closely with seven apiece.

Playing ‘normal’ was War Horse actor Tom Hiddleston's biggest challenge

Playing ‘normal’ was War Horse actor Tom Hiddleston's biggest challenge

After a year playing a vampire, a Shakespearean king and a supervillain, War Horse star Tom Hiddleston relished his new “incredibly normal” role.

The star of Thor and the BBC’s Henry V has just finished shooting a cameo role in the as-yet unnamed new film by Joanna Hogg.

The London director gave Hiddleston his first big-screen break in low-budget drama Unrelated, which scooped her the most promising newcomer Evening Standard British Film award in 2009.

They made Archipelago together, a tale of middle-class family angst, and when Hogg embarked on her third movie Hiddleston came to Kensington, where it is set, from a volcano in Iceland, where he played villainous Norse god Loki in the third Thor film adventure, The Dark World.

“My film career started with her,” he said. “I wanted to be part of the third.” It stars one-time Turner Prize nominee Liam Gillick and Viv Albertine, formerly of punk band The Slits, in the tale of a middle-aged couple considering leaving the city.

London-born Hiddleston, who played a vampire in Only Lovers Left Alive this summer, said: “I play someone incredibly normal. There’s a time in every Londoner’s life when you feel Soho, or the parks, or a certain social life, belongs to you, then it is taken over by the generation behind you. In the film, I’m part of the generation behind.”

Scenic Filming Locations In Iceland Revealed For THOR: THE DARK WORLD?

Scenic Filming Locations In Iceland Revealed For THOR: THE DARK WORLD?

Now that it's been confirmed that scenes for the anticipated Marvel sequel will be filmed in Iceland, three beautiful locations in the Island country have been identified for the shoot.

We received confirmation just a few days ago that Marvel Studios' forthcoming sequel, Thor: The Dark World will film partly in Iceland, in which ‘Malekith the Accursed’ actor Christopher Eccleston revealed he'll take part in. And now today, three beautifully scenic landmarks in the Nordic Island country have apparently been identified.

According to Þórarinn Björn, @Thrugl on Twitter, the Alan Taylor-production will use a portion of his family's land, which happens to include a beautiful canyon known as Fjaðrárgljúfur. The canyon is located in South East Iceland, while the nature of the shoot is unknown as well as when shooting will take place.

The 2nd shooting location is supposedly one of Iceland's biggest waterfalls, called Skógarfoss. Located in the southern part of the country, according to Reykjavik, access to the waterfall will be limited due to filming for Thor: The Dark World, this Friday.

And last but least, Icelandic site Visir is reporting that the star Chris Hemsworth has been spotted in town, and that he'll be shooting scenes at Landmannalaugar. The famous region, popular for hiking, is located near the volcano Hekla in southern Iceland. Google Translated, the site reports that filming may last a week. Special thanks to @Thor2fans!

Brit Filmmaker Joanna Hogg Casts Tom Hiddleston for New Film

Brit Filmmaker Joanna Hogg Casts Tom Hiddleston for New Film

Known as Hogg’s “London Project," the as-yet-untitled film is set to shoot in London for six weeks.

It is presented by the British Film Institute, BBC Films and Rooks Nest Entertainment and produced by Gayle Griffiths (My Brother the Devil, Archipelago) for Wild Horses Film Company.

Details of the movie remain under wraps.

Hogg said: "I continue to be fascinated by the blurred line between the comic and the horrendous - but depicting this in an ordinary, everyday context which is closer to home, and therefore more terrifying."

U.K. arthouse indie specialist distributor has snapped up U.K. rights to the project which also boasts regular Hogg collaborator Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers).

Hiddleston made his acting debut in Hogg's freshman film Unrelated and went on to star in her sophomore title Archipelago.

Gillick is a British conceptual artist and former Turner Prize nominee.

Hogg’s Archipelago, released last year, resulted in Martin Scorsese describing Hogg as a “uniquely gifted filmmaker."

THOR: THE DARK WORLD To Shoot Scenes At London's Butlers Wharf And in Greenwich

THOR: THE DARK WORLD To Shoot Scenes At London's Butlers Wharf And in Greenwich

It seems Marvel's Thor: The Dark World is set out to "showcase London in a major way," sending two individual letters to residents & businesses near London's Greenwich & Tower Bridge.

Seemingly finished with shooting at Bourne Wood, the production of Marvel's anticipated sequel, Thor: The Dark World will soon be showcasing London in a major way, according to filming notices recently distributed. While sequences at both locations will involve aerial shots, among other things, London's Butlers Wharf is on Marvel's radar before Greenwich district. The 1st letter is courtesy of Edvvc, and the 2nd via one of our readers.

"I am writing to you to inform you of our plans to film a scene for the forthcoming feature film entitled "Thursday Mourning" at Butlers Wharf on Monday 8th October from 0700 untill 1300.

The scene to be filmed at Butlers Wharf will ultimately form part of a visual effects sequence running through streets of London. We plan to film using specially adapted 2 meter long model helicopter, know as a Heli-Cam, which has a sophisticated camera mounted on the front. The Heli-Cam will start its Journey over the water, in the middle of the dock alongside New Concordia Whard. It will then fly under the footbridge and then turn left towards Tower Bridge, flying close to the handrail opposite Browns restaurant. We may also film a similar scene on the pavement outside the Cantina restaurant.

"Thursday Mourning" is the working title of a major feature film and we are currently working with many iconic locations across central London. One of our key locations in the film is the Old Naval College at Greenwich and we have various scenes to film that involve the Thames at high tide, camera boats, and aerial filming from a helicopter. To achieve this, we have to film before the clocks change, and the tides are right, and this has fallen on Sunday 21st October

We are currently liaising with all the official bodies regarding permissions. To achieve the aerial shots from the Helicopter, we plan so fly from the North Shore (Over Island Gardens), directly south to the South Shore of the Thames, starting at 500ft descending to 100 ft. (Almost exactly where the Cable wire camera was positioned for the Olympic coverage). We are currently discussing our plans with the Port of London Authority (PLA) and the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and a notice to mariners will be issued in due course.

We need to achieve this when the river is quiet from commercial vessels and the tides are right, which means we are proposing to shoot with the helicopter between the hours of 0700 and 1100.

The Helicopter will be in the air for 10-minute intervals through out the morning. As we film, we will need to hold river traffic with PLA river launches, and location security will assist with asking pedestrians and cyclists to wait momentarily on the Thames Path for short periods as the helicopter flies overhead. When the Helicopter is not required it will travel East and land back at a predetermined landing pad."

Metro Interview with Tom Hiddleston

Metro Interview with Tom Hiddleston

"Tom Hiddleston: I never expected in my wildest dreams to play Thor's Loki

Tom Hiddleston hit it big last year playing villainous god Loki in Thor and Captain Nicholls in War Horse. He returned as Loki in Marvel's Avengers Assemble.

You’re now shooting Thor 2: The Dark World, playing Loki for the third time. Is it fair to say this bloke has changed your life?

He has changed things a bit! I never would have expected in my wildest dreams to be cast as Loki. I’m not immediately identifiable as a kind of planet Earth-subjugating, autocratic villain and fascist. People who’d seen Cranford wouldn’t say: ‘Yeah, the guy from Cranford would be really great for this.’ He has expanded people’s perception of what I might be capable of doing.

Didn’t you go to extreme lengths when you were auditioning for the part of Thor himself?

I really, really did. I have naturally curly blond hair, so they were thinking: ‘He’s over 6ft, can do the big Shakespeare talks and he’s blond.’ But I was too skinny so I went to the gym for six weeks, had five meals a day, gained three stone in muscle and completely changed my shape. A month later they said: ‘We’re not going to cast you as Thor but we’re so pleased with what you’ve done, we’d like to offer you the part of Loki.’

Do you think it was all meant to be?

I hope so. Chris Hemsworth is definitely Thor. He’s monumental in every meaning of that word so it all worked out for the best and I don’t have to eat lashings of chicken any more. That makes my life a lot easier.

What was it like working and hanging out with that incredible cast?

I know it sounds trite and obvious but we had a riot. Chris had a house with a swimming pool and a table tennis table and we’d all go round there for barbecues. He was recently married and making sure he enjoyed his first year of wedlock. It was huge fun and totally made up for the summer I missed in London. I had no picnics on Hampstead Heath, didn’t throw around a single frisbee in Hyde Park. But instead I had this American summer camp in Albuquerque, New Mexico, playing ping pong and going horse riding. The code name for the film was Group Hug and it really felt like that.

Loki’s intense. Do you take him home with you?

I have a shower when I get home and wash him away. I find running really helps, actually. It’s an immensely balancing thing in my life. I have all my best ideas when I’m running. I’ll run in the morning before going to work. With Marvel Avengers Assemble, I was usually sitting in the make-up chair at 5am so I was running at half past three. I think it’s something to do with punishment, self-inflicted, but also to do with getting oxygen to the brain at that time of day, then going to work. It means by the time you put the costume on, you’re really awake.

You are famously very smart. How does that help in your career?

I don’t know. I suppose I’ve always been a literary person and fascinated by words, which helps in relation to drama. I read Classics at Cambridge but that’s not to deny that, as a child, I loved superheroes. I grew up on Christopher Reeve’s Superman and, in a way, a part like Loki in a film like The Avengers is a fantastic concoction of everything I love. It’s got psychological drama, action and all the things I enjoy about acting. People do sometimes look at me like I’m using lots of big words but those are the only ones I can think of.

What else were you into as a kid besides Superman?

I used to watch Michael Keaton’s Batman on a loop. I loved it and I loved The Joker. You can get very intellectual about it. It’s almost like superheroes are a kind of modern mythology that are a bit like the Greek or Roman gods. They unite people because they can project their understanding of life on to these massive characters, with all of the same frailty that we have. They all suffer the same pride and vanity and virtue.

Didn’t your mother introduce you to acting?

She really was the one who introduced me to it as an idea in many ways. We lived in Oxford and she was the first person to take me to the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, and introduced me to foreign-language cinema. She expanded my taste beyond just Superman and Indiana Jones.

What British stuff do you always take when you’re working abroad?

My laptop is really important to me. It’s got all my music on it but that’s not a specifically British thing.

What? No tea bags or chocolate?

I was sent a box of dark chocolate HobNobs when I was doing The Avengers. There was a little cupboard in my trailer with all of these biscuits.

Who sent them to you?

A friend of mine. It was hilarious. I had nothing but Loki’s crazy costume and horned helmet, and a whole cupboard full of dark chocolate HobNobs.

Marvel's Avengers Assemble is out on DVD and Blu-Ray."

Summer 2012 Comic Book Movie Awards

Summer 2012 Comic Book Movie Awards

"With the summer movie season officially coming to an end this past Labor Day weekend, we decided to take a look back at the comic book movies of summer and issue some awards. It was a really good summer for comic book movies, as The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, and The Amazing Spider-Man ruled the box office. Even the Men In Black made a comeback, though most probably didn’t realize it was a comic book movie. And just for the record, since Dredd hasn’t technically been released in the U.S. yet, we didn’t include it in the summer movie season, even though Comicbook.com’s Russ Burlingame caught a sneak peek at Comic-Con and gave it a great review.

Best Comic Book Movie – We loved both The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises, but since there can only be one best, we have to give the nod to The Avengers. After all the waiting and build-up with the various Marvel Studios solo movies, it was great to see The Avengers really deliver on all the hype. It was the best time we had at the movies all summer.

Best Comic Book Movie Actor – Either Robert Downey Jr. or Christian Bale would certainly be deserving of this award as they both delivered the stellar performances we’ve come to expect from them, but we decided to recognize someone who turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Most fans didn’t know what to think when Mark Ruffalo was cast as Bruce Banner/Hulk in The Avengers. Now, after seeing his performance, we’re left wanting another Hulk solo movie. Mark Ruffalo really exceeded expectations and gave fans the Hulk they had been waiting for.

Best Comic Book Movie Actress – Like best comic book movie, this one was a tough one. Both Scarlett Johannson and Anne Hathaway delivered solid performances as the female lead in their respective movies, but we have to give the nod to Anne Hathaway. To quote, President Barack Obama, “I got a chance to see Batman, and she was the best thing in it.”

Best Comic Book Movie Hero – The Avengers are great as a team, but there can only be one best comic book movie hero. Since The Dark Knight Rises was the last time that Christian Bale will wear the cape and cowl, it’s only fitting that we acknowledge how he gave fans the Batman that they had always wanted to see on the big screen.

Best Comic Book Movie Villain – Well, we ruled out Catwoman, since she eventually turned to good (plus she already got an award). It was a close battle between Bane and Loki, but Tom Hiddleston really raised his game to a whole new level. Hiddleston made for the best villain we’ve seen in a comic book movie since Heath Ledger gave us a Joker for the ages.

While The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises racked up all our awards, The Amazing Spider-Man and Men In Black 3 should not be forgotten. Andrew Garfield did a great job as the new Peter Parker, and Men In Black 3 was an entertaining return for the Men In Black franchise. They were just overshadowed by the excellence of The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises.

First News interviews Tom Hiddleston

First News interviews Tom Hiddleston

"Tom Hiddleston plays the evil baddie Loki in the action-packed Marvel Avengers Assemble. We find out more…

What part did Marvel comics have in your childhood?

I read the Beano and the Dandy but one thing that I did have – and this is the honest truth – was the Marvel Super Hero and Super Villain Top Trumps. I must have been eight or nine years old and that was my collection. We used to play Marvel Top Trumps religiously. They were brilliant. So that was my engagement with the Marvel Universe. Do I still play? Every day!

Is it true that during one scene you actually asked Chris Hemsworth, who plays your brother, Thor, to punch you?

That’s true! It was a good move. It was the final climactic fight between Thor and Loki on the bridge at Stark Tower. I had my big helmet on and we had been shooting that fight for the whole day. Because of the helmet I couldn’t really move my head very much and it didn’t look like Chris was punching me in the face and it was supposed to look like that. So I asked Chris to really punch me in the face. He asked if I was sure and I replied that it was fine. And it was great! It was fun; I’m still young and fit enough to enjoy all that.

What about the scene when the Hulk beats up Loki?

That was assisted a bit by special effects! I thought it was great. It was an elaborately constructed gag. And about 60% or 70% of it was really me, so I still had a wire attached to my ankle, which was then pulled by three enormous men and I went flying out of the shot and landed on my back. And then there was a whole afternoon where I had to jump as high as I could into the air and land on the floor in different positions.

How did you feel after a day of action scenes like that?

I had a few massages. For everyone it was a massive feat of physical endurance. We might have four or five days of action and then on the sixth day a big dialogue scene. We had to be fit enough to make sure that we were not completely ruined by the stunt work. I did 75 days on this film, which is a lot. We all came away with bumps and scrapes. You can’t be in a film like this with all the action without coming away with a few aches and pains.

Were you pleased when you found out Loki was going to be the only villain?

Yes, I was chuffed, but what always happens when you get a job is that for the first hour you are SO excited! Then the terror sets in over the amount of work that you are going to have to do. But it was a privilege from start to finish. It was really great.

Do you think children will be frightened of you?

The thing is that I don’t look anything like him, so I’m hoping they won’t be frightened when they meet me. Maybe if I put on the horns!

You play Loki with a smile. Is that what makes him scary?

Thanks! He has a charm. He is not the god of menace or the god of chaos, he is the god of mischief and he is an imp. There is something delightful about mischief. Joss Whedon (the director) kept saying to me to be more menacing, more feral, more dangerous, but also, to enjoy myself.

What was it like having Loki’s sceptre?

It was like being a big kid and pretending to fire weapons. We tried to conceive that it had a recoil like a gun so that when you pulled it back the energy came out… like a bolt of energy. There was what we called The Hero Sceptre and The Stunt Sceptre. The Hero Sceptre was made of very heavy brass and was impeccably polished. It even had Norse runes inscribed on the side and the actual blade was sharp and metallic. The Stunt Sceptre was made of rubber and was lighter, which meant I could hit Chris Hemsworth with it!

Since you were the baddie, did you still get to hang out with the superheroes while on set?

All of these projects are shrouded in secrecy and the code name for this film was Group Hug. I’m pleased to say I was not excluded from the hugging!

The film is about to be released on DVD, so is there a cut scene that you hope will be included in the DVD?

One of my favourite scenes was a bit shortened for the narrative. It is the chase at the beginning, as we tear through the SHIELD facility as it is being destroyed. That was shot in thousands of miles of subterranean mushroom tunnels in Pennsylvania. I was there for four days and it was all real, no green screen. I was sitting in the back of that truck, tearing through those tunnels at 50 mph. It was absolutely thrilling and we shot a lot more footage than is actually there.

Watch Tom playing the baddie Loki in Marvel Avengers Assemble, which is released on Blu-ray and DVD on 17 September."

Auch Jim Jarmusch war von den Dreharbeiten in Deutschland begeistert: "Thanks also to MMC Studios and their excellent facilities here in Köln. And, most personally, I want to thank all the amazing members of our crew and production for all their hard work, their invaluable contributions, and their incredible spirits. I will deeply miss working together with all these truly wonderful collaborators."

New Thor: The Dark World Set Photos - Shooting began in Bourne Woods

"Filming for Thor 2: The Dark World gets underway in Surrey... but where is star Chris Hemsworth?

He starred in the first Thor film as the heroic titular character.

But Chris Hemsworth was nowhere to be seen as filming got underway for the second movie in the Marvel franchise, Thor 2: The Dark World earlier today (Monday).

And it seemed as though it was action from the word go for the rest of the cast as they began shooting scenes for the upcoming film in Bourne Woods, Surrey."

SFX Interview with Tom Hiddleston

"With the Blu-ray and DVD of Avengers Assemble set to be released next Monday (17 September), we chat with actor Tom Hiddleston – who plays Loki in the movie – to find out more…

What do you like about your character in Marvel’s The Avengers?

“Loki is such a great, larger-than-life character. He has so many dimensions. He is motivated by jealousy, ambition, pride, vanity, arrogance and greed – and yet he gets to have a lot of fun because of his predisposition towards mischief. On one level, he is this grandiose agent of chaos. He’s a cackling villain standing on rooftops, laughing at the sky. But on another level, he’s a lost child and a brother who was always the second string because he grew up in the shadow of Thor. He’s a rejected, abandoned son who has no place in the universe, so all his destructive anger is motivated by a lack of self-esteem. I don’t think he even knows it, but he’s desperately trying to give himself a purpose.”

At what stage did you discover that Loki would be part of Marvel’s The Avengers?

“[Marvel’s The Avengers producer] Kevin Feige suggested Loki would be part of the Avengers storyline when I got cast in Thor, but I was so busy trying to build the character that I couldn’t think about it. I knew perfectly well that if I was rubbish in Thor, I wouldn’t get anywhere near The Avengers. That’s when I thought I’d just take everything one step at a time.”

When did the reality of Loki’s role in Marvel’s The Avengers hit you?

“Towards the end of the Thor shoot, Joss Whedon came into Marvel for a script meeting and he asked [Thor director] Kenneth Branagh to see a rough cut of Thor. Joss wanted to see what he could do with Chris Hemsworth and where to take the character of Thor, as well as Loki. Joss loved it so much that we went for a cup of tea and we had a long, fantastic conversation where we swapped loads of ideas. Joss said to me, ‘There’s been some talk of multiple villains in this movie, but I think you can do it on your own,’ which was the most incredible compliment. I had a mountain to climb after that.”

What’s it like to work with Joss Whedon?

“What impressed me the most about Joss initially was the incredible screenplay we had to work with on Marvel’s The Avengers. Directing this film was a feat in itself, but his screenplay was phenomenal. I’m sure none of us really knew what to expect, but I take my hat off to Joss for that. He was incredibly open and that’s what you want as an actor: you want to collaborate. Everyone has a certain level of ownership of their character and Joss was very respectful of that possession. He would constantly ask us, ‘Does this feel right for your character? Does this feel true to you? Is this in your voice?’”

THOR: THE DARK WORLD Set Construction Spotted In Bourne Wood, England

THOR: THE DARK WORLD Set Construction Spotted In Bourne Wood, England

"Near the end of August, a filming sight in Bourne Wood, England was announced for the anticipated Marvel sequel, Thor: The Dark World. And frequently used as a location for filming movies, the woodland areas is said to establish a “fictional village set in another realm,” in the film, where a battle between two kingdoms will ensue.

While set preparations began August 6, Twitter user LOC Ops has shared photos with us showcasing the progress of the set's construction from then up until yesterday. Although nothing too revealing yet, check out the photos below in addition to one via Lyndsay King displaying a bit of the fictional village's architecture."

Glamour UK: Why We Love Tom Hiddleston

Glamour UK: Why We Love Tom Hiddleston

19 Reasons why Glamour UK loves Tom:

1. With those blonde curls and blue eyes, as deep as the sea, we have to admit, here at GLAMOUR.com we’ve quickly become fully paid-up members of the Hiddleston army.

2. Reason No. 1 for why we’re head-over-heels for all things Hiddlestonian? This one is easy-peasy, lemon-squeezy. He’s super sexy and he can do brooding photo shoots. Please see the evidence to your left.

3. Reason 2? Tom is sexy enough to make villains hot. As Loki in Thor we totally dug that whole moody-blue-Frost-Giant thing, because Tom makes mythical alien baddies strangely alluring.
